The hospital, which is still in operation, is organised around a main courtyard, avenues, pavilions and even a church, thus illustrating the evolution of psychiatric care, balancing aesthetic considerations with therapeutic concerns.

For a long time, people suffering from senility and other forms of dementia were confined in appalling conditions. After the Revolution, Philippe Pinel, a doctor at Bicêtre Hospital near Paris, demonstrated that ‘madness’ could be understood as an illness and advocated the creation of ‘asylums’, a term meaning ‘refuges ’. Jean-Etienne Esquirol, from Toulouse, was to become one of his most fervent disciples and would contribute to improving the status of patients. Indeed, a law was passed on 30 June 1838, requiring every department to establish a public psychiatric hospital.

This exclusive tour opens the doors to a functional building, inaugurated in 1852 and designed to treat mental disorders. It was conceived by Doctors Jean-Baptiste Delaye and Gérard Marchant, the successors to Jean-Etienne Esquirol. They developed an architectural concept in harmony with their medical programme. The city’s architect, Jacques-Jean Esquié, brilliantly brought this concept to life.

You’ll be immersed in a magnificent yet little-known space. The setting, on the outskirts of Toulouse, is particularly striking: the countryside allows the hospital to spread over 25 hectares, accommodating 500 patients. The choice of a secluded location outside the city was essential. It laid the foundations for moral and agricultural work, whilst ensuring fresh air and a sense of security.

Moreover, once you’ve passed through the monumental gate flanked by elegant arcades, you’re likely to be surprised by the main courtyard, the chapel and the avenues lined with brick pavilions.
