About

A guide and an architect take you on an original exploration of the modern and contemporary buildings in Toulouse city centre, as well as the major architectural trends that contribute to the city's identity.

For a long time, Île du Ramier was primarily used for flour milling. Following numerous floods of the Garonne, the city acquired the island’s land in 1904 to turn it into a park for the people of Toulouse. It established industrial infrastructure there that changed the course of history. As for the 21st century, it is reclaiming the site’s wild natural character in the interests of well-being and respect for the environment, thanks to the ‘Parc Garonne’ project.

This special tour offers two perspectives: the architect reveals the boldness of the projects built over the ages, whilst the tour guide connects these eras from a historical and human perspective. The synergy between the two offers you engaging discussions in which you can take part. What’s more, these discussions often lead you to explore paths on the island that even the locals haven’t yet dared to tread!

We’ll be talking about the Saint-Michel Bridge, the hydroelectric power station, the Banlève wind tunnel, the large sports park with the Nakache swimming pool and the stadium, the Cité Faucher and other surprises… This is a rare opportunity to understand and appreciate the industrial heritage of this ‘forest island’, which is all too rarely showcased.

Tour organised in partnership with Noviciat and the Maison de l’Architecture Occitanie-Pyrénées. Booking essential.
