Carcassonne
Morning
You set off by coach to the city of Carcassonne. “You must see Carcassonne before you die,” sang Brassens! Come and discover this jewel of our history and wander through its charming streets and alleyways. It’s a true immersion into the Middle Ages. From afar, you’ll see it emerge like a dream, perched like a crown on a hill surrounded by vineyards. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, it invites you to travel back in time.
During the 13th century, the city of Carcassonne was besieged several times. It was during this period that the city took on the imposing appearance we know today. Overlooking the whole site, the castle is a fortress within the fortress. Magnificent and imposing, it embodies feudal power! Its double rampart is one of the key features of this stronghold. In the 19th century, the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc undertook its restoration. Ramparts, towers, and barbicans regained their former splendor!
