About

Find out how Napoleon III developed ‘Gallo-Roman’ archaeology to further his political ambitions.

Napoleon III (1808–1873) saw in Julius Caesar, the conqueror of Gaul, a reformer and a skilful tactician who had brought order and civilisation to the Gauls. He sought to demonstrate Caesar’s genius in order to justify the kind of power to which he aspired. He founded the “Gallo-Roman Museum” in 1862 in the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye near Paris. Today it is the National Archaeology Museum, whose masterpieces are on display in the exhibition.

No booking required; admission is included in the ticket price for the temporary exhibition.
