About

Does painting on water seem impossible to you? And yet! Inspired by the installation “La Goutte d’eau”, discover a surprising artistic technique in which patterns emerge on the surface of the water.

Conceived as a response to the installation presented at the Chapelle de La Grave (a poetic reference to the historic flooding of the Garonne that affected Toulouse in 1875), this workshop invites participants to explore an artistic technique in which water becomes a canvas for creation.

Following the artist’s example, and through a different medium, the marbling workshop extends this exploration by inviting participants to work with water as an artistic medium themselves.

But what exactly is marbling?
Marbling (or marbled paper) is a decorative technique that originated in the East before spreading to Europe from the 17th century onwards. It has long been used to adorn the edges and covers of antique books.

Creating with water as a medium
The principle is simple and fascinating: coloured pigments are dropped onto the surface of a pool of thickened water. The colours float and spread freely, forming undulating patterns which can then be manipulated using fine tools to create unique designs.
A sheet of paper is then gently placed on the surface to capture the imprint of the pattern, producing a composition that cannot be reproduced exactly.
Each creation thus becomes a one-of-a-kind work of art, where chance, the artist’s touch and the movement of the water come together.
