Written in 1989, this play transports the audience back to the evening of 6 July 1815, a pivotal moment in French history. Napoleon I had just lost power for good following his defeat at Waterloo and had abdicated in favour of his son, Napoleon II.
Two men operating behind the scenes find themselves face to face for a dinner that will go down in history: Fouché and Talleyrand, former ministers, seasoned strategists and survivors of every succession of power, must decide what form of government will follow: a Republic? A Monarchy? An Empire?
A dinner at which two men decide the fate of millions of others.
They have all betrayed, all the time, under every regime. Retaining power is the ultimate goal, whatever the cost…
Shall we dine? Yes. What shall we eat? France.
How do you like your French? Well done, medium, or rare?
Are you hungry? Go without. This table isn’t set for you.
Laugh, weep, shout – you can only watch the spectacle, for your voice will count for nothing.
