About
A woodcutter and his wife live in poverty in the forest. It's cold and the couple are hungry. He works hard and she gathers wood in the forest. The forest is crossed by a train that never stops, but whose passengers leave scraps of paper on the tracks.
She doesn't know it, but the train is full of Jewish families on its way to the death camps. The poor woodcutter keeps these scraps of paper as precious possessions without knowing what is written on them, because she can't read.
One day, she hopes for another gift, something that might help her and her husband to live better. One day, a large parcel wrapped in a beautiful golden shawl falls off the train... In it, a child...
This sublime tale by Jean-Claude Grumberg is presented in the form of a staged reading accompanied on the piano by Swan Starosta.
