About
It traces the daily life, beliefs and religious practices of the inhabitants of Gaul after the Roman conquest led by Julius Caesar. It also offers an original look at the birth of "Gallo-Roman" archaeology in the 19th century, under the impetus of Emperor Napoleon III.
Living in Roman times invites visitors to discover the daily lives of the inhabitants of Gaul after the Roman conquest. Through stelae, inscriptions and everyday objects, the exhibition shows how the Gauls integrated the Roman model while preserving certain traditions, revealing social organisation, the role of the army and the skills of craftsmen.
The exhibition then explores the world of the gods, where Celtic and Roman influences mingle. Sculptures, offerings and votive objects bear witness to public and domestic cults, rituals and the expectations placed on divine protection.
Finally, the exhibition looks back at the birth of Gallo-Roman archaeology in France, marked by the impetus of Napoleon III and the excavations at Alesia, while showing how current research is moving towards a broader approach to rural territories and practices.
This exhibition is the fruit of a two-way partnership: with the Musée de la Romanité, which created the exhibition in Nîmes, and with the Musée d'Archéologie Nationale, which is the scientific curator and whose masterpieces are being presented in Toulouse for the first time.
