About

What a terrible pain love is. Daria Deflorian directs a novel by author and Nobel Prize winner Han Kang. Between the living and the dead, between dreams and friendship, the memory of a forgotten and denied massacre creeps in.

After the success of La Vegetariana, presented at Garonne in 2025, Daria Deflorian is continuing her foray into the work of South Korean writer Han Kang (winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2024). Working with the same team, this time the director is adapting Impossibles adieux.

The thirty thousand corpses left behind by the state after the massacre on Jeju Island in 1948 have been hidden away and it is forbidden to look for them. A rule that, from generation to generation, has left a raw wound and persistent ghosts. Without attempting to reproduce the complex weave of the book on stage, Daria Deflorian extracts its essence here, comparing their respective intimate stories with the great History. This is an adaptation in fragments that draws on all the poetry of the novel and, through the three figures on stage, seeks to repair many of the links with great sensitivity.
