About

As part of the "Gestes. Arts et savoir-faire en Occitanie" programme, Les Abattoirs is presenting the exhibition Assemblages. Prendre soin des choses, a historical and contemporary re-reading of a gesture that runs through the Abattoirs' collections and across the ages: assemblage.

Assemblage is an artistic practice that emerged in the 20th century in the West, involving the combination of objects salvaged from everyday life. Used by Picasso, Braque and the Dadaists, it creates unclassifiable works that question our relationship with objects, between criticism of consumer society and the memory of things.

Through works in the Abattoirs' collections, the exhibition explores the many facets of a practice that transcends the object itself, and whose meaning and aesthetic vary from one period and culture to another.
