The evening also puts the instrument in the spotlight with the second concerto dedicated to it by Richard Strauss. This work possesses a Mozartian clarity, a trait it shares with Schubert’s Symphony No. 5. When composing for the horn, Strauss was inevitably thinking of his father, who was regarded in his day as one of the greatest virtuosos of the instrument. Alongside Alexander Soddy, renowned in both opera and symphonic circles, the Orchestre du Capitole welcomes an exceptional performer who is every bit the equal of his predecessor: Stefan Dohr, principal horn of the Berlin Philharmonic.
