About

This theatre is an old municipal building that was converted to a theatrical venue in 1982.

Inaugurated in 1982 by Pierre Baudis, then mayor of Toulouse, the Nouveau Théâtre Jules Julien was entrusted to Luc Montech, who took over its management and set up his company, the Théâtre du Réel. The venue adopted an eclectic programme that supported Toulouse's many theatre companies, while trying to broaden and diversify the audiences it catered for. The Nouveau Théâtre Jules Julien opens its doors to theatrical performances, concerts, readings, dance and improvisation. It runs an actor's school for adults, amateurs and young people, and offers "spectator meetings" to help audiences better understand the techniques involved in creating a show from the point of view of lighting and set design. It also works closely with teachers, offering shows for young audiences and providing introductory theatre classes and help with putting on shows.

In 2011, the town council decided to create a new structure, comprising the Sorano and Jules Julien theatres. The Théâtre Sorano offers a multi-disciplinary programme, with a particular focus on contemporary writing and support for associated companies and companies in residence. The Jules Julien theatre continues to focus on theatre for young audiences and amateur theatre for audiences of all ages.

In 2016, the Sorano and Jules Julien theatres went their separate ways. Pascal Papini, actor, director, director of the theatre section at Toulouse's Conservatoire à rayonnement régional (CRR) and teacher, will take over as director of the Théâtre Jules Julien.

The Théâtre Jules Julien is part of Toulouse's Conservatoire à rayonnement régional, and is responsible for supporting and presenting young companies. It also acts as a centre for production and transmission.

Jules Julien is a veritable conduit for theatre, continuing to provide training for young people, adults and professionals alike. It is strengthening its links with schools through dedicated programming and renewed cultural initiatives. It also encourages professional encounters between artists and audiences, with guest artists and special events. The theatre has a permanent residency for young companies and supports their new creations, model presentations, factory outings and previews.
