About
Come and discover tales of ghosts, mummies, esoteric rituals and cursed martyrs as you wander through the city’s narrow streets… this eerie tour will conclude with a spellbinding encounter at the city’s keep – no longer pink… but blood-red!
The walk begins at the ruins of a forgotten church, the Cordeliers. As early as the 16th century, the monks would preserve certain bodies to make them immortal. These were then displayed to ‘mummy-goers’ so that they might humbly reflect on their time on this earth. Ever since these bodies were destroyed during the Revolution, frail shadows are sometimes seen wandering amongst the ruins.
If you find yourself having to flee suddenly, be on your guard… for your guide might then lead you into dark alleyways from which some victims never emerged—neither alive nor in one piece…
Return to safety in the old Villeneuve ramparts district (Place Wilson). The sighs of the victims of the 1562 massacre of the Protestants still echo here. It is but a short step from one tragedy to the next; head towards Place St George to see for yourself. Do you think you can hear the sound of bones cracking instead of the rustling of the trees’ leaves? That’s to be expected, as this is where the great public executions took place. Your guide will recount how they unfolded and the notoriety of certain executioners, such as Anatole Deibler.
Finally, as night falls, you’ll be taken back to the Donjon after it’s officially closed and… well, you’ll see what’s in store for you there, heh heh heh (Machiavellian laugh) …
