About

Mahler died in Vienna on 18 May 1911. A few days later, Thomas Mann, a great admirer of the composer, set off for Venice.

He drew from it the essence of a masterpiece, the screen adaptation of which by Visconti – *Death in Venice* – brought things full circle by introducing Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 to the general public through its magnificent *Adagietto*. It was also in Vienna that Paul Wittgenstein premiered the Concerto for the Left Hand in 1932. Ravel wrote this wildly virtuosic work for the pianist, who had his right arm amputated; it is full of the energy – at times dark – that only the composer could conjure. The harmony between the duo formed by Frank Beermann and Adam Laloum from Toulouse has led the Orchestre du Capitole to invite the artists to perform together for the third time.
