LE VIOLONCELLE VIRTUOSO

From the lowest to the highest notes, the cello is the instrument that most closely mimics the human voice. And that is undoubtedly why it moves us so deeply. Before becoming the instrument of choice for soloists and inspiring numerous composers to write iconic concertos, it began its career modestly, playing the role of basso continuo in Baroque music. Now that is a noble role if ever there was one! To be nothing more than a backdrop for the soloist’s voice, always supporting it, never overshadowing it.

But instrumentalists are incorrigible. Give them a new toy, and some will explore its every possibility to the very limits of virtuosity. Tchaikovsky’s formidable Rococo Variations are very much in this vein. The overture to Rossini’s *William Tell* is like a showpiece, whilst ‘Une larme’ explores the instrument’s expressive tenderness before it, too, gives way to virtuosity.

To bring this music to life, we have invited the rising star of the cello, Julie Sévilla-Fraysse. We, who are already 73 years old, love introducing you to young, passionate and fascinating instrumentalists.
