The golden age of the castratos, repositories of a supernatural singing technique, came to an end at the dawn of the nineteenth century. The last great castrato to shine on the operatic stage was Giovanni Battista Velluti (1780-1861). Through the richness of his embellishments and the expressive power of his singing, Velluti left his mark on the transition from Baroque to Romantic Bel Canto. Rossini, Meyerbeer and the last representatives of the Neapolitan school composed grandiose operas for him.
