The name Marilyn Monroe is associated with the image of a Hollywood icon, a white dress flying as she stands over a metal grid, that scene in a pink dress and diamonds in « Gentlemen Prefer Blondes » or even « Happy Birthday, Mister President ».
The exhibition « Marilyn Monroe, America’s secret », on display throughout the summer at the Espaces EDF Bazacle in Toulouse, looks behind the glamour and glitz to reveal a Marilyn who was more intimate, darker, but also very endearing.
A photo exhibition far removed from the usual clichés
Over two floors, 240 large-format photographs tell the story of Norma Jeane (her real name) from her chaotic childhood to her last night, between 4th and 5th August 1962.
The exhibition’s panels contain a wealth of anecdotes about her origins, her love life and her professional career, right down to the name of her biological father, which was only recently discovered!
Personal items (a cocktail dress, jewellery, James Dean’s lighter and Marlon Brandon’s cigarette case) provide a glimpse into the star’s private life. Did you know that the actress was very committed and a great lover of literature (Proust, Hemingway, Steinbeck…) and art?
Norma Jeane vs Marilyn Monroe
As you peruse the huge images, you can share in historic events such as President John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s famous birthday party, when Marilyn wore the famous flesh-coloured dress adorned with 2,500 rhinestones, as well as family photos and holiday snaps. Other personalities from the era are also featured, including Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart, Grace Kelly and Kirk Douglas.
The Espaces EDF Bazacle offers you a real encounter with both Norma Jeane and Marilyn Monroe!
