About

This is an unpublished Book of Hours painted in 1841-1842 for the Prince de Joinville, 3rd son of King Louis-Philippe.

Twenty years later, in 1861, the manuscript was offered by its creator, Adélaïde Louise d'Eckmühl, to Father Henri-Dominique Lacordaire for the refoundation of Dominican convents, particularly those at Saint-Maximin and La Sainte-Baume.

The exhibition, entitled "Enluminer l'Amour" (Illuminating Love), explores the history of manuscripts and the revival of book illumination in France in the 19th century, through missals, wedding books, prayers, etc. painted by professionals or amateurs.
